The power of meaningful conversations
Talk2U is a health tech startup that develops conversational experiences using artificial intelligence to raise awareness among young people in 7 countries about pressing issues using proven science-based interventions. Since 2018, it has been developing projects and programsfor the United Nations, UNICEF, and Disney about sexual assault, Venezuelan refugees, self-esteem, Climate change and more.
Meeting young people where they are
The organization wanted to reach people between the ages of 13 and 24, increase their engagement and understanding of critical topics, and deliver quality experiences using technology already familiar to them.
Open, honest engagement
Engaging young people can be a challenge, especially if they live in remote areas. When Talk2Udecided to launch a project called Amazon on Fire to raise awareness and help preserve the Amazon rainforest from deforestation and wildfires, it needed to make sure it could reach young people who live far from South America’s cities and towns in and around the Amazon basin.
The organization identified important topics to launch online and automated conversation experiences on Messenger to engage young people through the power of conversation. By creating fictional AI characters who speak both Spanish and Portuguese, they proposed personas that can communicate empathy in factual storytelling about the ongoing destruction of the rainforest. “We chose Messenger so that we can reach young audiences where they are by using the technology we know they like,” says Talk2U Founder and CEO Nicolas Ferrario.
The lead character in Amazon on Fire is named Jazmín Mendes. The purpose of Amazon on Fire is to increase understanding about the relationship between cattle ranching and deforestation and encourage people to eat less meat. By engaging young people one-to-one, the hope is to inspire people to take more action to protect the environment and slow climate change.
The experience includes eight micro-interventions using positive psychology and habit development techniques developed by experts offline and incorporated into AI-based experiences that can be scaled to millions of people. During the experience, Talk2U offers a menu that people can select from to create a personalized journey with gamification features that include images and short descriptions of science-based interventions.
“The integration with Messenger gives us the platform we need to reach thousands more people than otherwise possible,” Ferrario says. “So far more than 45,000 people have engaged with the Amazon on Fire app, with 84% saying they learned something and 92% saying they felt like they were talking to a friend.”
Talk2U’s brand and logo don’t appear anywhere in the experience because they want to highlight the topic at hand, not the organization. People who engage with the AI and keep the conversation going by sharing the stories and talking to their friends on their platforms become“talkers.” “Being open and honest goes a long way. At the same time, connecting with videos, voice messages, and selfies on Messenger makes conversations more fun and engaging,” saysTalk2U Chief Technology Officer Nelson Leoni.
Artificial intelligence helps Talk2U determine each person’s interest so it can continuously improve engagement. The startup looks forward to using what it learned from Amazon on Fire to build even more engaging experiences in the future.
