# Data Use Checkup

**Warning:** Beginning January 2024, developers with apps that have been published live with a use case or advanced access to any [permission](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/permissions/reference) or [feature](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/features-reference) will be required to complete [data handling questions](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/development/release/data-handling-questions/questions-preview) as part of their annual [Data Use Checkup](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/resp-plat-initiatives/individual-processes/data-use-checkup).

## Overview

Protecting people’s privacy is a major priority for Meta and the developers who build on our platform. That’s why we require an annual checkup to make sure your API access and data use comply with our [Platform Terms](https://developers.facebook.com/terms) and [Developer Policies](https://developers.facebook.com/devpolicy).

The Data Use Checkup is an annual assessment that evaluates whether a developer’s continued use of and access to specific data via Meta APIs is in compliance with our Meta Platform Terms and Developer Policies. It is required for developers whose apps have been published live with a use case, or have [advanced access](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/graph-api/overview/access-levels#advanced-access) to [permissions](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/permissions/reference) or [features](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/apps/features-reference).

In order to complete DUC and maintain API access, you must:

- Examine your previously approved or existing permissions, features and products.
- Certify this app follows the allowed usage.
- Certify that you are following the Meta Platform Terms and Developer - Policies, together with all other applicable terms and policies.
- Answer questions about your [data handling practices](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/development/release/data-handling-questions).
- Provide testing instructions for your application. More information for this can be found at [ongoing compliance reviews](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/resp-plat-initiatives/individual-processes/app-review).

If an app has been published live with a use case, or has [advanced access](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/graph-api/overview/access-levels#advanced-access) to permissions or features, an app admin will need to complete a Data Use Checkup for that app.

Data Use Checkup is not required for developers whose apps have [Standard Access](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/graph-api/overview/access-levels#standard-access) to permissions and features. In addition, developers do not need to complete DUC while the app is in [Development mode](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/development/build-and-test/app-modes#development-mode), but will need to complete DUC before the app can be switched to [Live](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/development/build-and-test/app-modes#live-mode) mode.
