Setting Up Business Manager and Pages Permissions

To assign roles and build your Instant Articles team, you can set up Business Manager—a Facebook tool for managing your Pages. This governs who has access to your Page(s) and which administrative and publishing permissions each person has.

If you would prefer not to use Business Manager, you may still publish Instant Articles.

First find out if your organization has a Business Manager account.

If you're not sure whether or not your organization has a Business Manager account: ask your social media team or your advertising team (if your organization runs ads on Facebook). These are the people who are most likely to have access to your organization's Business Manager account. For privacy reasons, we can't give you access to your organization’s Business Manager account or tell you the names of the existing admins.

The steps below provide an overview of the entire Business Manager setup process. If your organization already has an account, skip the first step.

Create a Business Manager account:

First, locate your organization's Business Manager account, and only if your organization doesn't have one, create a new account.

Add a Page to an existing Business Manager account:

Add the Page(s) associated with your Instant Articles feed to your Business Manager account. In most cases, this will be your organization's main Facebook page.

Add your team to your organization's Business Manager and to your Page(s):

  1. Add your team as Employees
  2. Add your team as Page admins: Suggested role - Analyst

Access Instant Articles tools:

Use Business Manager or your direct Page(s) to access the consuls where you can configure and manage Instant Articles.

Find or create a Business Manager

If you don't already have a Business Manager account for your Page(s), here's how to create one:

  1. Go to business.facebook.com.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click Get Started.
  3. On the Getting Started page, click Next.
  4. Enter a name for your business, select the primary Page, and enter your name and work email address.
  5. Click Create Business, and we'll show you a message to welcome you to Business Manager.

For organizations managing multiple publications, we recommend that you create just one Business Manager account for your organization and add employees and Pages representing all of your publications. However, if you would prefer to create separate Business Manager accounts for each publication, you are welcome to do so.

Add a Page to an existing Business Manager

Once you have a Business Manager, follow these steps to add Pages you own to the account. Note you must be a Business Manager Admin to add Pages.

  1. Go to business.facebook.com.
  2. In the left column select Claim Assets + Page.
  3. Then add the name or URL of your Page, and click Claim Page.

Add your team to Business Manager and your Page(s)

Once you have a Business Manager account for your Page(s), these steps explain how to add people and give them access to it and to the Page(s) in it. Note you must be a Business Manager Admin to add people.

Step-by-Step:

1. Business Manager

2. Add People & Assign Roles

3. Assign Pages

4. Skip Ad Account Settings

5. Skip Instant Articles Settings

6. Email Confirmation

1. Business Manager

Go to business.facebook.com, in the left column select "Add New", then "People".

2. Add People & Assign Roles

In the dialog box, enter the email addresses of the people you want to add, using commas to separate multiple addresses. Assign each person either a Business Manager Admin or Business Manager Employee role, based on the permissions each has. (Use this table to understand what each role allows.) Select the preferred roles, then click "Add People".

3. Assign Pages

On the page that follows, select the Page(s) you want to assign and choose a role for the person. We recommend selecting the Analyst role for team members who build an Instant Articles feed (e.g. product manager, engineers, and designers). This role provides access to the Instant Articles tools, without allowing permission to publish posts to the Page. You can learn more about permissions for each role by selecting, Learn About Roles... in the role drop down menu.

4. Skip Ad Account Settings

Click Skip on the page that follows. For Instant Articles access, you don't need to set up an Ad Account in Business Manager.

5. Skip Instant Articles Settings

Click Skip again on the page that follows. For access to Instant Articles, you don't need to select any Catalogs in Business Manager.

6. Email Confirmation

Next, the people you added will receive an email informing them of their new role(s) on your Page(s). They will be prompted to verify their name and identity with a Facebook email and password.
