Transferring App Assets from a Gray Account

This document provides detailed instructions for transferring app assets from gray accounts. A gray account is used to admin Facebook Pages and run advertising without a personal Facebook account. As such, gray accounts are limited in scope and do not have access to as many features as standard Facebook accounts do, including certain security features.

Please ensure that you have the necessary administrative and legal ties between your business and the individual accounts you are transferring the apps to. If an individual employee is the sole administrator of an app and the employee leaves the company it can be difficult to transfer asset ownership back to the company. We strongly recommend having multiple admins associated with an app where possible, and regularly reviewing who has access to any apps that you have.

1. Log in with the Gray Account

Log in to your gray account and go straight to developers.facebook.com. Bear in mind that as your gray account does not have a News Feed you may not be able to access facebook.com once you are logged in. If you are having trouble, try entering developers.facebook.com in your address bar and going straight to our developer site.

From the top navigation bar on developers.facebook.com, select ‘Apps.’ You should see a dropdown of the gray account’s existing apps, as seen in the image below.

Select an app for which you would like to add a new admin. If your gray account is an admin for multiple apps, you will need to follow the steps outlined in this document for each app individually.

Please note that if you try to create new apps, a popup will show stating ‘You are not authorized to create new apps.’ This is because you are logged in with a gray account, and gray accounts are not authorized to create new apps.

2. Select ‘Roles’

Select ‘Roles’ from the left side navigation bar.

Then, select ‘Add Administrators.’

3. Enter the username or the user ID for the new Administrator

When adding new admins to an app, you can usually just type in the name of any of your friends and they will appear in the drop-down menu. However, your gray account will not have any friends. As a result you will need either the username or the user ID number of the account you would like to add.

If you don't know the username or user ID for the account you wish to add, you can get it by visiting their timeline on Facebook. The URL in your address bar will read - https://www.facebook.com/USERNAME.

If the account does not have a username, it will appear like this - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=USERID.

Note that when you enter the username or user ID it should display in a drop-down format as seen in the screenshot below.

  • If the username or ID is not available from the dropdown, it is not a verified account.
  • You may need to add a phone number or credit card to the account that you wish to add so that we can verify it.
  • If the account you enter is not permitted to create new apps (e.g. if it is another gray account), you will not be permitted to add it as an admin to an existing app.
  • We ask that all developers use authentic accounts to admin apps.

To find an account’s user ID, you can also enter http://graph.facebook.com/USERNAME into your address bar, replacing USERNAME with the username of the account that you would like to add.

4. Submit the Username or ID

Once you’ve entered the username or ID and selected it from the resulting dropdown, select ‘Submit.’

5. Access the change request

Log in to the account of the person or entity you are transferring the apps to. Go to developers.facebook.com. You will see a notification for a pending request, as seen in the screenshot below.

Select ‘Requests’ from the dropdown.

6. Confirm the change request

The request to become administrator of the app will appear, as seen in the screenshot below. Select ‘Confirm.’

7. Access the App as Administrator

You will be taken to a page notifying you that your confirmation was successful. Click ‘Go to the App Dashboard.’ You will now be able to see the app dashboard as an administrator, as seen below.

8. Confirm the Administrator change

To check the change was successful you can log back in to the gray account, and see the new admin account listed as an admin of the app as shown below.

You will need to repeat the steps in this document for each app owned by the gray account. You can also remove your gray account as an admin for an app in the 'Roles' section of the App Dashboard.
