Meta Content Library

Meta Content Library is a web-based tool that allows researchers to explore and understand data across Meta technologies by offering a comprehensive, visual, and searchable collection of publicly accessible content.

See Meta Content Library API for information about the complementary API product that allows researchers to programmatically pull data from the same public content library.

Audience-restricted content

Facebook and Instagram content can have age-based or location-based audience restrictions. This can affect the data surfaced in Meta Content Library user interface (UI) and API as follows:

Age restrictions

Age restrictions may be imposed by producers on their content, or restrictions can be based on the classification of content as less appropriate for certain age groups.

Meta Content Library UI and API may not surface age-restricted content as it is not considered publicly accessible.

Location restrictions

Location restrictions may be imposed for a variety of reasons, such as producers limiting visibility of their content, local laws, legal actions, etc. For example, see Content Restrictions Based on Local Law.

Facebook

  • Meta Content Library UI does not surface location-restricted content to users accessing the tool in that restricted location.

  • Location-restricted content is unavailable to users accessing Meta Content Library API using a cleanroom that is in a restricted location.

Instagram

  • Location-restricted content is not publicly accessible and will not be surfaced in Meta Content Library UI or API.

Language scope

Search results in all languages are included unless the search is filtered based on language (language filter is not available for all types of data).

If not, view counts are refreshed every 5-7 days. View counts for posts created more than 180 days ago are refreshed every 5-7 days. View counts are not available for posts created before January 1, 2017. Views of content may register differently on Instagram and Facebook: On Facebook, a content view is logged when content is either fully visible or covers at least 50% of the screen height for 250ms. On Instagram, the content needs to be at least 50% visible for the same duration to register a content view.

Additional information

  • The search index only searches raw text of content from public Facebook Pages, groups and events, and from public Instagram accounts and public Threads profiles. It does not search metadata of photos, full URL matches, or comments. Occasionally results will match terms that are semantically related to a query term, or contain the query term as a substring. Tags in a post cannot be searched.

  • Search is case insensitive and only complete matches are returned (not partial matches).

  • The user interface retrieves only the top 1,000 search results, so the search results are not necessarily representative of all Facebook, Instagram or Threads posts on the search term in the specific timeframe of the query.

  • The top 1,000 search results can differ slightly day to day, not only due to newly created content but also because post owners might have deleted the content or modified the privacy settings.

  • Newly created Facebook profiles, Instagram accounts or Threads profiles, and content posted by these newly created profiles and accounts may not be included in Meta Content Library for up to 4 days.

  • Grouping multiple keywords in querying the data is not supported for languages that are read right-to-left.

  • Each researcher is limited to a maximum of 60 searches per minute.

  • Each researcher is limited to 500,000 total search results for Content Library UI per 7-day rolling window.

  • Results in downloaded CSV files from Content Library will be counted towards your 500,000 total search results limit. You also have a separate multimedia query budget in your downloads of 1,000 search results per 7-day rolling window.
