What's new in the Threads API

By Everton Fernandes Rosario

Over the past year, Threads has introduced many new features and improvements as our community continues to grow.

We're excited to bring that same energy to the developer experience with a major set of improvements to the Threads API to give your customers new ways to publish richer content, integrate Threads into your apps, and manage interactions at scale. Threads is for public conversations that build perspective, and these capabilities should give your customers new ways to thrive on Threads.

1. Publish richer content

New content types and formats give brands and creators more ways to spark conversations and share perspectives.

  • Cross-share to Instagram Stories: Seamlessly share a Threads post to Instagram Stories via a linked Instagram account for additional distribution.
  • Text attachments: Attach long-form text to your posts with up to 10,000 characters and formatting (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, highlighter).
  • Ghost posts: Create ephemeral, text-only posts for unfiltered thoughts that auto-archive after 24 hours.
  • Spoilers for text, image, and video: Add spoiler tags to posts containing text, images, or videos, including carousels. Users tap to reveal hidden content.
  • GIF support: Add GIFs to your posts using GIPHY.

2. Integrate Threads into your app

It’s now easier to embed Threads content, publish with web intents, and discover relevant posts and profiles.

  • Tokenless oEmbed API: Embed public Threads posts on your website or app without providing an API access token or going through App Review, making it faster and easier than ever to integrate Threads content.
  • Web intent enhancements: New post intent parameters let you pre-configure topic tags, set reply controls, and compose replies or quote posts when directing people to publish via threads.com/intent/post.
  • Search and discovery updates: You can now search for public posts by media type or author username, and the follower threshold for profile discovery has been lowered from 1,000 to 100 followers. Additionally, replies and mentions now return is_verified and profile_picture_url fields.

3. Manage interactions and stay updated

New controls and real-time notifications help your customers manage their Threads presence at scale.

  • Reply approvals: Create posts with reply approvals and manage pending replies by approving or ignoring them.
  • Webhooks for publish and delete events: Receive real-time notifications when posts are published or deleted, in addition to existing reply and mention webhooks which now also return is_verified and profile_picture_url fields.
