We’re excited to announce Meta’s new REST API framework — the latest and most modern way to build and integrate with Meta’s diverse API offerings. We have listened closely to feedback from the developer community, who have found many aspects of integrating with the existing Graph API framework confusing and challenging. The new REST API framework aims to address these challenges by providing a more consistent, predictable, and seamless integration experience. Designed with developers in mind, this framework embraces industry standards and modern API design principles to improve clarity and ease of use. Over time, this framework will continue to evolve to further simplify and enhance the developer experience.
REST (Representational State Transfer) is a widely adopted architectural style for building networked applications. It uses standard HTTP methods like GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE to enable communication between clients and servers. Our new REST API framework is based on the OpenAPI standard, which means it offers a familiar and standardized interface that simplifies development, maintenance, and integration.
Meta’s product ecosystem has grown far beyond the social graph, expanding into messaging, virtual reality, AI, and more. To support this evolution and provide the best developer experience, we needed an API framework that is:
The new REST API framework is already powering exciting new areas at Meta, including the Llama API for large language models and other generative AI surfaces.
You will begin to see more new APIs built exclusively on the REST API framework. By 2026, REST will become the default for all new APIs across Meta.
If you are currently using Graph API, no immediate action is required. Your existing integrations will continue to function as usual. We will continue to keep you informed with updates and guidance as our platform and API offerings evolve, helping you plan and adapt smoothly.
We believe this new REST API framework will empower developers with greater flexibility and better overall experience integrating with Meta’s APIs. Stay tuned for more updates and resources as we continue to build and expand this exciting new foundation.
Please note: This is not a reintroduction of the deprecated REST API from 2011.
