API for Ads Related to Politics or Issues of National Importance

To increase ads transparency, we require advertisers who run ads related to politics or issues of national importance to confirm their identities and provide “paid for by” disclaimers that communicate who paid for the ad. We initially made this available in the U.S. and will expand over time to other countries.

For your clients who plan to run ads related to politics or issues of national importance, you need to implement the following changes for them to continue to use your platform. Once an advertiser is authorized, they can indicate that an ad is related to politics or issues of national importance, and apply the label with the “paid for by” disclaimer during the ad creation process.

Learn more about the authorization process.

Create an Ad Related to Politics or Issues of National Importance

Once a valid authorization is in place, you can create an ad related to politics or issues of national importance:

Using the Facebook Ads API, add the "authorization_category" field with the "POLITICAL" value to the “creative” field in the API request.

For example:

curl \
  -F 'status=ACTIVE' \
  -F 'name=Test' \
  -F 'adset_id=<id>' \
  -F 'creative=
      "object_story_spec": {
          ...
  },
      "authorization_category": "POLITICAL"
  }' \
  -F 'access_token=<token>' \

Create an Ad Creative

To create an ad creative, use the "authorization_category" field with the "POLITICAL" value.

For example:

curl \
  -F 'authorization_category=POLITICAL' \
  -F 'object_story_spec={
      ...
  }' \
  -F 'access_token=<token>' \
  https://graph.facebook.com/v3.0/act_<id>/adcreatives

Note: We don't support ads related to politics or issues of national importance with Dynamic Ad creatives or ambient live video broadcasts in countries where we've launched authorizations, which currently include the U.S. and Brazil.
