User Consent and Tagging

Users should always have choice and control in how they use Facebook channels and products. Because of this, apps should never automatically tag a user or their friends in a photo. Please obtain express consent of the user on whose behalf you are doing the tagging, and also remember that users can tag friends even after the image is added to their profile.

Authentic Tagging

Images where the user is being tagged should accurately label what is depicted in the image. Tagging must not be used in collages, with avatars, or for marketing or promotional purposes.

Additionally, tagging should also never be used to add a 'photo banner' to a friend's Profile, as the images do not accurately depict the user. Manipulating a friend's Profile with a banner often results in negative user feedback.

Photo Captions

You must not pre-fill Photo captions unless the user manually generated the content earlier in the workflow. These fields are intended for users to express themselves. Pre-filling these fields erodes the authenticity of the user voice.

Best Practices

As a best practice, we encourage developers to avoid providing users with the option to tag their friends in apps which generate images containing lists of friends. This has a tendency to lead to strong negative feedback from users, which may result in your app exceeding our spam thresholds in violation of our Principles. An example of this can be seen here:
